Learning and Individual Differences: Process, Trait, and Content Determinants.
Ackerman, Phillip L.; Kyllonen, Patrick C.; Roberts, Richard D.
In preparation for a conference on learning and individual differences, the invited authors prepared chapters, which were distributed in draft form. Presentations were followed by discussions, which were recorded, and then edited for this volume, so that the discussion transcript follows each paper. The chapters in part 1, General Background and Perspectives, are: (1) Intelligence and Human Resources: Past, Present, and Future (Earl Hunt); (2) Individual Differences in Learning and Memory: Psychometrics and the Single Case (Alan Baddeley and Susan Gathercole); (3) Minding Our Ps and Qs: On Finding Relationships between Learning and Intelligence (David F. Lohman); and (4) Investigating the Paths between Working Memory, Intelligence, Knowledge, and Complex Problem-Solving Performances via Brunswick Symmetry (Werner W. Wittmann and Heinz-Martin Suss). Part 2, Processes, contains : (5) Intelligence and Visual and Auditory Information Processing (Ian J. Deary); (6) Individual Differences in Priming: The Roles of Implicit Facilitation from Prior Processing (Dan J. Woltz); and (7) Learning, Automaticity, and Attention: An Individual-Differences Approach (Edward Necka). Part 3, Methodological Strategies, contains: (8) The Structure of Ability Profile Patterns: A Multidimensional Scaling Perspective on the Structure of Intellect (Mark L. Davison, Haijiang Kuang, and Se-Kang Kim); (9) Investigating Theoretical Propositions Regarding Mental Abilities: Their Structure, Growth, and Influence (Keith F. Widaman); and (10) Exploiting the Speed-Accuracy Trade-Off (David E. Wright and Ian Dennis). Part 4, Traits, contains: (11) Personality and Skill: A Cognitive-Adaptive Framework (Gerald Matthews); (12) Measuring and Understanding G: Experimental and Correlational Approaches (Jan-Eric Gustafsson); (13) Individual Differences in Motivation: Traits and Self-Regulatory Skills (Ruth Kanfer and Eric D. Heggestad); (14) Mining on the No Mans Land between Intelligence and Personality (Lazar Stankov); and (15) Sensory Processes within the Structure of Human Cognitive Abilities (Richard D. Roberts, Gerry Pallier, and Ginger Nelson Goff). The final section, section 5, Content, contains: (16) Searching for Determinants of Performance in Complex Domains (Richard K. Wagner); (17) Individual Differences in Reasoning and the Heuristics and Biases Debate (Keith E. Stanovich and Richard F. West); (18) Learner Profiles: Valuing Individual Differences within Classroom Communities (Patricia A. Alexander and P. Karen Murphy); and (19) Traits and Knowledge as Determinants of Learning and Individual Differences: Putting It All Together (Phillip L. Ackerman). Each chapter contains references. (Contains 46 tables, 39 figures, a subject index, and an author index.) (SLD)
