Leveraging Partnerships to Internationalize the Liberal Arts College: Campus Internationalization and the Faculty
Brewer, Elizabeth
New Directions for Higher Education, n150 p83-96 Sum 2010
Small, liberal arts colleges can be unlikely partners for international partnerships. With limited numbers of faculty members, a focus on teaching rather than research, educational facilities as opposed to research facilities, and undergraduate populations, they often are looked at skeptically by potential partners in countries with no liberal arts tradition and where value is associated with research rankings rather than quality of instruction. Nevertheless, international partnerships with liberal arts colleges can serve both receiving and sending institutions. Further, for liberal arts institutions in particular, partnerships with universities in other countries can offer opportunities to help them internationalize the campus. Although the exchange of students may remain the basis for most institutional partnerships, a focus on using the partnerships to internationalize the faculty, and through them the curriculum, can have lasting, positive effects on the teaching and learning taking place on the liberal arts campus. Activities beyond the exchange of students, however, require that partnerships be grounded in institutional strategies and have faculty ownership. This article provides a review of study abroad and partnerships within the context of liberal arts colleges. Particular attention is given to the role of faculty and the internationalization of the curriculum. A case study of a partnership between Beloit College in Wisconsin and Henan University, a Chinese university located in Kaifeng, Henan Province, provides an example of how internationalization can be coupled with opportunities for faculty development to maximize the benefits of an institutional partnership.
