The School Librarian as Instructional Partner: Team up with Teachers to Guide Student Learning
Hand, Dorcas
Knowledge Quest, v39 n5 p22-26 May-Jun 2011
In this article, the author describes the "History as Story" project that has become important to the Annunciation Orthodox School (AOS) and the teachers in many ways. Patience, persistence, and quiet support of individual teachers' projects demonstrated the breadth of possibility if they would collaborate with the school librarian. Teachers do sometimes think a steamroller is headed their way when the possibility of collaboration gets going--but together they make it happen. AOS uses a curriculum management system that allows all teachers and school librarians to cross-check units in all grades and disciplines. Including "History as Story" in this system, in both the core disciplines and the library, encourages increased cross-curricular collaboration, and demonstrates to the administration how budget money spent in the school library is tied to student achievement. Teachers have also discovered the richness of working with their librarian as an instructional partner.
