A Situation Description of the Demographic Distribution, Economic Activity and Level of Education of Zulu Manpower in Kwazulu and the Republic of South Africa, 1970.
Verwey, C. T.
Results of a study to determine the future demand for Zulu manpower are reported. The study is a prerequisite for research on integrating education with economic development and manpower needs. Data were obtained from the 1970 population census and were categorized according to the demographic distribution, economic activities, and the educational level of the Zulus. Although results from the 1970 data cannot be applied to present situations, several trends should be considered in relation to educational planning: 1) In 1970 more than one-half of the Zulu population were between the ages of 0 and 15 years, 2) 40% were farm and forestry workers with a low taxable income, 3) the population was distributed mainly in rural areas, 4) part of the population migrated to other areas to work, 5) the larger number of illiterates was among the higher age groups, and 6) the Zulu with high educational qualifications preferred not to be in agriculture.
