Demands of Training: Australian Tourism and Hospitality.
Freeland, Brett
Qualitative research was conducted as part of a four-industry project studying operation of training markets, one of which was Australian tourism and hospitality (T&H). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 individuals representing stakeholder groups. Interviews were conducted across Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia and discussed 3 levels of training: entry, vocational education and training (VET) for workers, and VET for unemployed and disadvantaged. Findings were that policymakers and stakeholders generally believe increased training will lead to increased profitability for the T&H industry; T&H enterprises do not greatly value formal training acquired by individuals prior to employment; enterprises go to considerable effort to ensure that persons they employ have the necessary personal attributes to contribute to success of the enterprise; and the extent and type of training conducted by enterprises within the T&H industry has shifted. The study concluded the characteristics of the enterprise contribute to variation in skill requirements and training methods; prevocational training and attainment of qualifications are important for only some sections of the T&H industry; personal skills and attributes are more important than technical skills for people wanting to enter the T&H workforce; and flexible training arrangements are required if the T&H industry and enterprises are to continue to develop.
