A health specialist working in a program providing health, social, and educational services to low-income children and families implemented and evaluated a practicum intervention designed to increase inner-city mothers' knowledge of the importance of ongoing prenatal care throughout pregnancy and to improve the mothers' health. A prenatal education and support program was developed. The program operated for 1.5 hours bimonthly for 8 months. A series of 15 sessions was conducted by medical professionals and educators. It was expected that all pregnant participants would: (1) learn more about prenatal care; (2) recognize wholesome, nutritious foods, as opposed to junk foods; (3) follow physicians' orders; (4) be weighed and have their blood pressure taken at each prenatal support session; (5) deliver full-term infants weighing a minimum of 5.5 pounds in 18 of 25 cases; and (6) have positive attitudes toward pregnancy. At the end of the practicum, 19 of 20 babies were born full-term and weighing at least 5.5 pounds. One infant was pre-term and delivered by caesarean section at 1 pound, 3 ounces.
