Keeping Current. Library Media Specialists: Addressing the Student Health Epidemic
Buddy, Juanita
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v22 n2 p56-58 Oct 2005
Health and educational leaders are sounding the alarm about the unhealthy condition of many students in America's K-12 schools. Each day, new scientific studies confirm that "The majority of American youth are sedentary and do not eat well. Sixteen percent of school-aged children and adolescents--or nine million--are overweight, a figure that has risen threefold since 1980. Poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, and being overweight can lead to complications such as elevated cholesterol and blood pressure, gallbladder disease, joint problems, asthma, type II diabetes, depression, and anxiety." (Action for Healthy Kids 2004). The library media specialist is well-positioned to contribute to improving overall student health by introducing students, faculty, and parents to timely resources that can foster lifelong lifestyle changes that can result in good health. This article highlights strategies and resources the library media specialist may employ in response to this growing national health crisis.
