Child Care and Child Nutrition
Karolak, Eric
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n187 p66-68 May-Jun 2009
The weak economy is challenging the child care program budget. Fluctuations in enrollment come up against rising costs making every penny count. So for many reasons a federal program that helps defray the costs of snacks and meals in child care programs is particularly important and timely. In this article, the author pushes for the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act. The primary interest of the author in the legislation is the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), which serves more than two million children in child care settings each day. CACFP provides reimbursement for food and meal preparation costs, ongoing training in the nutritional needs of children and food safety, and onsite assistance in meeting the program's nutritional requirements.
