An occupational survey comparing active duty and Reserve Forces nurses was conducted to support a Nursing Resources Study Group gathering information on current and future nurse requirements. Job inventory booklets were sent to chief nurses at Reserve and Air National Guard locations which were administered during unit training meetings. Returned job inventory booklets from 452 AF Reserve nurse and 160 Air National Guard nurses were compared to tasks performed by 1,332 randomly selected active duty nurses. Comparative evaluations of job content were formulated for the following areas: (1) duty AF specialty code (DAFSC), (2) job typing analysis, (3) flight category, (4) operating room category, (5) anesthetist category, (6) inpatient category, (7) obstetric nurse category, (8) outpatient category, (9) psychiatric category, and (10) administrative category. Two observations based on the findings are: (1) the assignment of an AF Reserve or Air National Guard nurse outside the U.S. is an extreme rarity, and (2) many Reserve and Air National Guard personnel are utilized primarily in a training capacity in both on-the-job training and classroom situations.
