The Traditional World of Islam Film Series: A Teacher's Handbook.
Fix, Jerrold E.
The guide describes a series of six films examining the influence of Islamic doctrine and traditional practices on human endeavors throughout the Islamic world. The objective of the series is to fill an informational gap concerning the important contributions that Islamic civilization has made to the achievements of man. The films are entitled: "Unity,""Nomad and City,""Man and Nature,""Patterns of Beauty,""Knowledge of the World," and "The Inner Life." Though maximum educational values come from viewing the entire series, each film is self-contained. The guide is divided into six parts, which are designed for reproduction and distribution to the students. Part I introduces the series, pointing out general background and objectives. Part II explains use of the guide and suggests orientation by lecture before viewing. Part III summarizes each film, describing background material, underlying meanings, and emphases. It also offers teaching aids for each film, pointing out principal goals, meaningful terms and expressions used, vocabulary words and geographic locations to learn, and suggests questions for discussion. Part IV recommends textbooks and general works for background readings, and Part V lists film libraries from which the series may be obtained. Part VI is a map which is available free from Institutional Cinema Inc. (CK)
