Shaping New Literacies Research: Extrapolations from a Review of the "Handbook of Research on New Literacies"
Tierney, Robert J.
Reading Research Quarterly, v44 n3 p322-339 Jul-Sep 2009
In the "Handbook of Research on New Literacies," editors Julie Coiro, Michele Knobel, Colin Lankshear, and Donald J. Leu have compiled a set of papers representing the most comprehensive discussion to date of research and theoretical perspectives in this emerging field. The editors selected authors who are making important forays into our understanding of these new literacies--their nature, influence, and potential. The "Handbook" offers significant insights on a host of issues, including how the internet, instant messaging, gaming, digital productions and other communication modes and technologies are changing literacy and the way we view it. The review addresses in turn each contribution and section in the volume at the same time as it highlights selected themes, complementary work, and undersubscribed areas and offers extrapolations about new directions.
