The Battle to Secure Our Public Access Computers
Sendze, Monique
Computers in Libraries, v26 n1 p10-16 Jan 2006
Securing public access workstations should be a significant part of any library's network and information-security strategy because of the sensitive information patrons enter on these workstations. As the IT manager for the Johnson County Library in Kansas City, Kan., this author is challenged to make sure that thousands of patrons get the access they need on the 365 public computers, while at the same time ensuring the integrity of the system. In this article, she discusses the three main computer security issues that arise on a daily basis: (1) confidentiality; (2) integrity of the system; and (3) availability of the workstations and the network.
