Idea Bank: Individualized Assessment in the Choral Ensemble
Furby, Victoria J.
Music Educators Journal, v100 n2 p25-29 Dec 2013
Choral directors will always be assessed by the quality of their choral performances. The concepts presented in this article are designed to strengthen and improve choral performance. If choral directors can design an individualized assessment plan and implement some of these ideas during each grading period, grades will be more equitably determined. As an added benefit of implementation of these practices in her own ensemble, Victoria Furby sees increased motivation in her classroom, and more students arrive better prepared for rehearsal than at any time in her teaching career. Ultimately, Furby's students are receiving a better, more consistent music education than ever before. One key to the successful implementation of these practices is a class website containing a calendar with rehearsal schedules and assessment dates, recordings of the concert repertoire, links to websites with sight-reading and music theory assistance, and a detailed grade book of the work the students have completed. Regular access to this website allows students to monitor their progress and work on their own to achieve their goals. Individualized assessment has been a valuable tool in Furby's classroom and helps to maintain organized, well thought out, carefully planned, and well-executed rehearsals, leading to better and better choral performances.
