Graduation 2010: Second Year Implementation.
O'Phelan, Mary H.; Norman, Antony D.; Ecton, Gayle W.
The second-year implementation of Graduation 2010, a districtwide public-school initiative, had its beginnings in brain-based research and involvement from both school and community. The original plan for the program had eight strands: (1) Arts; (2) Music; (3) Foreign Language; (4) Reading/Language Development; (5) Thinking Skills; (6) Health/Emotional Health; (7) Family Involvement, and (8) Community Involvement. Surveys were distributed to principals in 12 elementary schools and to the superintendent. These administrators were asked to rate the implementation of the original goals of the project. Implementation was classified as low, moderate, or high for each strand. Strands classified as low in implementation were Health/Emotional Health and Thinking Skills. Music and Family Involvement were classified as moderate; Foreign Language was moderately high, and the arts and Reading/Language Development were high. Using the list of 1997-1998 goals as the standard, implementation in two strands (Music and the Arts) would be considered high, and implementation in the remaining strands would be considered moderate. All schools reported at least moderate levels of implementation with respect to the 1997-98 goals. An appendix of survey items classified by strand and by type of item is supplied. (Author/DFR)
