Androgynous persons accept both their masculine and feminine characteristics rather than adhere to traditional sex-role stereotypes. This study tested whether the multidimensional approach and psychological freedom of androgynous persons would give them greater self-esteem, self-acceptance, and acceptance of others, according to their own evaluations. Two hundred undergraduates were identified through the Bem Sex-Role Inventory as androgynous, masculine, feminine, and undifferentiated and took three tests designed to determine their self-evaluations of the three variables. Results show that the androgynous persons expressed higher degrees of self-esteem, self-acceptance, and acceptance of others than groups of masculine, feminine, or undifferentiated persons. In addition, masculine and androgynous persons reported higher self-evaluations than did undifferentiated and feminine identities. These results suggest that flexibility is mediated by one's sexual identity and that the androgynous person may be more capable of interpersonal competence. Three tables of findings are included. (CC)
