Using Active Learning in a Studio Classroom to Teach Molecular Biology
Nogaj, Luiza A.
Journal of College Science Teaching, v42 n6 p50-55 Jul 2013
This article describes the conversion of a lecture-based molecular biology course into an active learning environment in a studio classroom. Specific assignments and activities are provided as examples. The goal of these activities is to involve students in collaborative learning, teach them how to participate in the learning process, and give them a more active role in the classroom. At the end of the semester, student performance in an active learning environment is compared with that of a lecture-based course. The results show improved student performance in an active learning studio classroom. End-of-semester evaluations also show the positive response of students to the change in the way of learning.
