A conceptual approach to teaching modern dance can broaden the awareness and deepen the understanding of modern dance in the educational arena in general, and in dance education specifically. This article describes a unique program that dance teachers can use to introduce modern dance to novice dancers, as well as more experienced dancers, including college-level students, who may be unfamiliar with modern dance. In order to introduce the content and processes of modern dance choreographers and their works, this program explores five defining concepts of modern dance: (1) invention/revolution, (2) individuality, (3) experimentation/process, (4) community/collaboration, and (5) personal/cultural inquiry.
