An Interview with Professor Ohtomo: The Founding Father of Language Testing in Japan

This article presents an interview with Professor Kenji Ohtomo who retired in March 2006 from the post of Dean, College of Applied International Studies, Tokiwa University, Mito, in Japan. Professor Ohtomo is currently a Professor Emeritus at the University of Tsukuba and Honorary President of the Japan Language Testing Association, of which he was the founding president from 1996 to 2003. His 50-year career in teaching English started at a junior high school near Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Since then, he has taught and worked at senior high schools; the English Language Education Council, Inc.; Kanagawa University; the University of Tsukuba; and Tokiwa University. During these 50 years, he also had a chance to study at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., from 1965 to 1966 as a graduate student under the guidance of Dr. Robert Lado. Another experience in the United States was as a visiting scholar at University of California, Los Angeles, from 1979 to 1980. This interview took place after the 11th Japan Language Testing Association Annual Conference at Aichi Gakuin University on October 28, 2007. (Contains 22 footnotes.)
