Middle School Research. Selected Studies 1982.
Erb, Thomas Owen, Ed.
This sixth collection of research on middle schools is divided into three sections. Section I comprises five research articles, each with a practitioner's reaction discussing the article's implications for practice and suggesting further research. The articles include "Perceptual Styles of Pupils in Grades 5 through 8," by Grover Baldwin; "A Study of the Engagement of Middle School Aged Children during Mathematics Instruction," by David Byrd and others; "Middle School Principals and Job Stress," by Jack Brimm; "Consistency/Discrepancy of Disciplinary Concerns among Parents, Teachers, and Principals Associated with Middle Schools," by Joseph Huber; and "The Effects of Alpha Training on Achievement, Retention, and Disruptive Behavior of Middle School Children," by Doris Matthews, regarding a biofeedback method of controlling internal mind and body functions. Section II, a single article by Ernest Horn and Charles Mock, describes the evaluation of the middle schools program in Monroe County Community School Corporation in Bloomington (Indiana). Section III presents two articles by Hershel Thornburg and Randy Jones that assess the relative influence of individual-development variables and school-structure variables on student self-esteem and student perceptions on several issues.
