This article examines the issue of separation and its impact on military families, including on infants and toddlers. Deployments and unaccompanied tours of duty (temporary assignments and 12-24 month assignments, both without family members, respectively) take military personnel away from their loved ones for extended periods of time. Research has shown that young children are particularly vulnerable to these separations, and that fathers with infants experience great difficulty because they are away from their babies before forming an attached relationship. Support systems within the Department of Defense seek to help separated families feel linked through a variety of initiatives, such as increased access to email and videophones as well as family centers that offer critical hubs of connection and provide services like emergency assistance, respite care for children, and counseling. The author concludes with the argument that the Department of Defense must continue its efforts to evaluate military members' satisfaction and to renew and redefine programs to meet current and emerging needs. Assessing programs for infants, toddlers and their families in regards to separation is a critical element of the task at hand.
