Children of Migrant Workers: Exploring the Issues

The topic of migrant workers is commonplace among headlines in the national news, but such workers have been part of the United States economy for at least seventy-five years, as can be seen in decades of enrollment records in K-12 schools. In this article, the authors discuss an integrated unit of study which integrates language arts and social studies for the fifth grade classroom, that explores the issues faced by children of migrant workers through various literature, both fiction and non-fiction, historical and contemporary. They state that teaching about the children of migrant workers using engaging stories based on real historical and contemporary events will help children make personal connections to the past, to other cultures, and to the world as it exists today. These experiences can help dispel stereotypical perceptions of children of migrant workers. (Contains 13 notes.)
