Adolescent Pregnancy in an Urban Environment: Issues, Programs, and Evaluation.
Hardy, Janet B.; Zabin, Laurie Schwab
An in-depth discussion of national and local statistics regarding teenage and adolescent pregnancy and the developmental issues involved opens this analysis. Problems and adverse consequences of adolescent pregnancy in an urban setting are explored using a city-wide random sample of adolescent births. A model pregnancy and parenting program and its evaluation are described in detail. The following chapters consider aspects of establishing such a model program: (1) "Ethical Issues in the Medical Care of Adolescents" (Timothy R. B. Johnson); (2) "The Johns Hopkins Adolescent Pregnancy Program (HAC)" (Services and Evaluation); (3) "Medical Management of Pregnant Adolescents" (John T. Repke); (4) "Nutrition and the Pregnant Adolescent" (John T. Repke and Linda Carr Watkinson); (5)"Health Education: Teaching the Pregnant Adolescent" (Linda Carr Watkinson); (6) "The Role of the Nurse Midwife and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Pregnancy Care and Prevention" (Marcia Gratton); (7) "The Johns Hopkins Parenting Program (TAC)" (Services and Evaluation); (8) "Psychological Support for Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents" (Babette R. Bierman); (9) "Parenting Education" (Rosalie Streett); (10) "Comprehensive versus Traditional Services for Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents: A Comparative Analysis" (Anne K. Duggan, Catherine DeAngelis, and Janet B. Hardy); (11) "Contraception and the Adolescent" (John T. Repke and Theodore M. King); (12) "Elective Abortion and the Pregnant Adolescent" (Ronald T. Burkman); (13) "The Consequences of Elective Abortion"; (14) "The Self Center: A School Linked Pregnancy Prevention Program"; (15) "Sexuality and Health Education" (Rosalie Streett); and (16) "The Self Center" (Program Evaluation). Additional information is provided in 102 tables and 28 figures. (Contains 285 references.) (SLD)
