Author Bob Meyer, head of the Fay School (Texas) compares professional development strategies in his school to programs in other schools, which he feels are mostly prescriptive in nature, and are based on a deficit model--focused on fixing, rather than developing--and, thus, are not always inspiring. Here Meyer describes the professional development model developed at the Fay School that both engages and inspires the faculty. It is based upon three pillars: (1) developing faculty as people; (2) great teammates; and (3) content area experts. This article details each of these pillars and how they are accomplished in practice at the Fay School. Given that all schools have their unique cultures and goals, each school will need to customize its own professional development and support programs. Guidance is provided for building an engaged school culture that develops all teachers as people, teammates, and content experts, and is based on the pillars discussed in this article.
