Mexican-American Literature in the High School English Program: A Theoretical and Practical Approach.
Trevino, Albert Dwight
There has been no specific, detailed study, accompanied by pedagogical apparatus, of Mexican-American literature available for use in the high school English classroom. This study shows that there is a significant amount of Mexican-American literature which can be incorporated effectively into a high school literature program to meet the needs of an ethnically integrated English classroom. Using M. H. Abram's framework of critical orientations outlined in "The Mirror and the Lamp," the study analyzes some select contemporary Mexican-American literature from four critical orientations for the purpose of incorporating such literature into the high school literature program. The study also provides an annotated bibliography of suitable short fiction, poetry, and novels written by Mexican Americans. Suitability is determined by reading interest, readability level, classroom adaptation, and amount of Spanish. (Author/JM)
