A scarcity of research exists concerning professional school counselors' perceptions of their training regarding recognizing and addressing the mental health issues of children and adolescents in the elementary, middle, and high school setting. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of professional school counselors regarding their mental health training throughout their educational program. To accomplish this, 13 school counselors from Colorado completed a demographic inventory and participated in an in-depth interview. Using a qualitative transcendental phenomenological theory design, both the interviews and the demographic inventory were analyzed to extrapolate themes about the school counselors' perceptions of their graduate school counseling training programs. Five core themes surfaced: instructors should work in the field of school counseling or mental health; more experiential learning in the classroom; the importance of practicum and internship; school counseling students should be actively involved in mental health training outside of their program; and the overarching need of more mental health training throughout the preparatory programs.
