Medication Administration: Measuring Associate Degree Nursing Student Knowledge
Crowell, Debra L.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The American Nurse Association's (ANA) provisions outline the commitment expected of nurses to protect the community from harm. Medication administration coincides with patient safety as a compelling obligation in nursing practice. The study's purpose was to examine retention of medication safety knowledge among first year nursing students, after completion of basic medication administration content in a southeastern associate degree nursing program. Interval testing utilized an 18 item multiple choice questionnaire on medication safety knowledge assessment. Each question has 4 responses that measured student knowledge about multisystem problems, high alert drugs, calculation errors, properly written medication dosages, and infusion rates. Descriptive statistics and a comparison of each student's post-scores were analyzed using Kuder and Richardson test of reliability, Kolmogorov Smirnov (KS) test to assess for normality, McNemar's test, and repeated measures ANOVA test. The findings indicated a statistical difference in mean scores and retained knowledge between pretest, posttest, and three month scores.
