A Look Inside: MRI Shows the Detail

Understanding the advantages, risks, and financial costs of medical technology is one way that technologically literate citizens can make better-informed decisions regarding their health and medical care. A cascade of advancements in medical imaging technologies (Ulmer & Jansen 2010) offers an exciting backdrop from which to help students develop an understanding of and be able to select medical technologies (Standard 14 of "Standards for Technological Literacy," ITEA/ITEEA, 2000/2002/2007). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a prominent example of progress in both medical practice and physiology research. In clinical practice, physicians request the noninvasive MRI scans to acquire detailed three-dimensional (3D) images of their patients' organs and tissues. These MRI images can be used to diagnose and monitor a wide variety of conditions, such as some heart problems, injuries in muscles or joints, the presence of cysts and tumors, and lesions in the brain or spinal cord (Ulmer & Jansen 2010). The current article provides a general overview of the mechanisms underpinning MRI as well as suggestions for how to integrate its study into the technology and engineering (TE) classroom.
