"I'm Fascinated but I Don't Have the Confidence"
Hamilton, Mary
Adults Learning, v22 n6 p28-31 Feb 2011
Struck by the paucity of research into how older people use information and communication technologies, a group of "senior learners" at Lancaster University examined older adults' changing experience of technology and what motivates them to become engaged. Through group discussions, interviews and photographs they explored their changing experience of communication technologies. They asked how people make choices among print and digital media, and what prompts them to adopt new practices and learn to use technologies, or, indeed, to stay with the old and familiar. Contrary to stereotypes, people described a great variety of activities using devices that ranged from Skype, mobile phones and digital photography to speaking clocks and blood pressure monitors. Even within this small group, widely different attitudes were expressed. Using technologies for organising life, to pursue special interests and to keep in touch were strong motivations for communicating.
