LINWORTH/ALISE 2009 Youth Services Paper: Equal Opportunity? Poverty and Characteristics of School Library Media Centers
Pribesh, Shana; Gavigan, Karen
Library Media Connection, v27 n5 p20-22 Mar-Apr 2009
When the authors met through a mutual colleague, Gail Dickinson at Old Dominion University, Karen and Shana set about to examine issues that do not normally interest sociologists--the number of days school libraries are closed and whether or not library schedules (fixed or flexed) impact student achievement. However, Shana, a sociologist who teaches research methods and statistics, noticed a pattern in the results. Alarmingly, school libraries that serve large concentrations of children living in poverty were closed for more days, had fewer staff, and utilized a fixed schedule more often than school libraries serving few students living in poverty. Karen and Shana explored further and the resulting paper, "Equal Opportunity? Poverty and Characteristics of School Library Media Centers," won the 2009 LINWORTH/ALISE Youth Services Paper Award. This article provides an overview of the authors' findings. (Contains 5 charts.)
