Secondary School Advanced Mathematics, Chapter 1, Organizing Geometric Knowledge, Chapter 2, Concepts and Skills in Algebra. Student's Text.
Stanford Univ., CA. School Mathematics Study Group.
This text is the first of five in the Secondary School Advanced Mathematics (SSAM) series which was designed to meet the needs of students who have completed the Secondary School Mathematics (SSM) program, and wish to continue their study of mathematics. The first chapter, devoted to organizing geometric knowledge, deals with the distinction between inductive and deductive reasoning, and provides a structured review and organization of geometric concepts, relations, theorems and activities which were introduced in the SSM program. In the second chapter the system of postulates for the real numbers is developed; as each postulate is introduced related concepts and theorems are reviewed; polynomials and rational functions defined over the reals are also reviewed. Throughout the text the discussion of topics is aimed at reviewing, integrating, and, in some cases, extending factual knowledge of mathematics, by organizing this knowledge in a deductive system. Many problems of both the "find" and the "prove" varieties accompany each topics. (SD)
