Statistical Fun
Catley, Alan
Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, n201 p19-22 Mar 2007
Following the announcement last year that there will be no more math coursework assessment at General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), teachers will in the future be able to devote more time to preparing learners for formal examinations. One of the key things that the author has learned when teaching statistics is that it makes for far more meaningful experiences if learners are involved in working with real data. Although statistics coursework will soon be a thing of the past, the author believes that teachers can still have fun handling real data in the classroom. He still encourages teachers to incorporate resources such as "Census At School" into the teaching and learning of statistical topics; both at GCSE (both tiers) and also in S1 at A-level. Using real data gives a great deal more meaning for the learners than ploughing through textbook examples and exercises. In this article, he attempts to give a few examples of how this can be done: (1) pie charts; (2) working with single-variable data; and (3) scatter graphs and lines of best fit for 2-variable data. He found that using such data enabled him to cover a lot of the S1 syllabus with great efficiency as well as helping level 1 learners to appreciate what handling data was all about. (Contains 13 figures and 8 notes.)
