This book focuses on information literacy and facilitating change in schools. Chapters include:" What Is Information Literacy?"; "Why Information Literacy?"; "How Information Literacy Relates to National Curriculum Standards"; "Essential Components of Information Literacy"; "The Necessary Reforms and Changing Responsibilities"; "The Problem-Solving Component"; and "Creating All the Parts." Each of these chapters incorporates a summary, notes, and additional readings. The last three chapters include a checklist of information goals, objectives, and strategies, along with additional readings; four sample lesson plans; and World Wide Web resources. Separate appendices include national standards for math, science, history, English language arts, and fine arts, as well as transparency masters, and an Information Literacy handout. Includes an index and a computer disk containing: (1) Hyperlink Document--this file contains a short summary of each chapter of Fostering Information Literacy: Connecting National Standards, Goals 2000, and the SCANS Report followed by hyperlinks to the Web sites mentioned in that chapter; (2) Information Literacy In-service Transparencies--the transparencies for the Information Literacy In-service may be printed as is, enhanced with graphics, modified, personalized, or adapted to particular situations; (3) Information Literacy PowerPoint Presentation--the PowerPoint presentation may be used as is, enhanced with graphics, modified, personalized, or adapted to particular situations; (4) Information Literacy In-service Handout--the handout may be printed as-is, enhanced with graphics, modified, personalized, or adapted to particular situations; (5) Lesson Plan Model--the blank lesson plan model may be completed by teachers and library media specialists as they work together to develop authentic learning experiences and integrated units of study; (6) Checklist of Information Literacy Goals, Objectives, and Strategies--the checklist may be filled in and modified as teachers and library media specialists use the strategies mentioned and add some of their own.
