A Guide to Care and Management of Very Low Birth Weight Infants. A Team Approach.
Semmler, Caryl J., Ed.
The 14 articles, which make up the bulk of this book provide an interdisciplinary guide to the management of very low birth weight infants. Following an introduction, the first section, titled "Family Considerations," presents three papers discussing, respectively, parent-infant interaction, cultural variables in pediatric care, and parents' responses to children's problems. The six papers in section 2, "Medical and Development Management Concerns," address the changing perspective on early intervention, intracranial hemorrhage, positioning and position-induced deformities, low birth-weight follow-up at Children's Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, nutrition and feeding screening, and instructions for several feeding techniques. The first of five articles in the third section,"Developmental Assessment and Outcome" presents an introduction to measurement concepts and standardized testing; the remaining papers deal with cognitive/language development, neuromotor development, early childhood intervention, and the "legislative arena." This section also contains a general summary of the contents of the guide. Appendices offer information on car seat support, a maternal support system scale, a feeding questionnaire, a list of organizational resources, and administrative forms. Most of the articles include lists of references. (PB)
