This curriculum guide is designed to assist teachers and supervisors in introducing lower elementary students to the MS DOS computer and the word processing program PC Write. Accompanying this guide are two program disks: PC Write, which is a public domain word processing program and Disk Care, which reinforces rules for caring for disks. The guide begins by introducing students to computers: where and how they are used, hardware and software, and the proper handling of disks and computer lab equipment. After learning basic computer skills such as loading, saving, and formatting disks, students are introduced to specific word processing skills such as centering, block commands, and searching. Each lesson is followed by worksheets which reinforce what was taught in the lesson. Following the basics are lessons which use the computer as a writing and editing tool, encouraging the student to create poetry, short stories, and a newspaper. It is suggested that the book be used sequentially after the teacher is thoroughly versed in PC Write and familiar with the school's computer lab. Several classroom management procedures are noted as being particularly helpful in assuring a successful computer lab experience for both teacher and students. Appended materials include word processing activities, a glossary of terms, software duplication guidelines, tips on caring for diskettes, a list of Technical Assistance Centers located in the five boroughs of New York City, and student worksheets and games.
