Positive touch is an application of the ancient practice of infant massage. Positive touch provides families and caregivers with simple and positive ways to touch their child that contribute to the overall goal of providing a nurturing environment that supports the child's growth and development. This article describes infant massage techniques in the form of positive touch strategies for families and caregivers to practice in their daily routines. First, however, a brief summary of the efficacy research on infant massage for infants and young children in general, and children with identified disabilities specifically, is provided. Suggestions for introducing positive touch to families, illustrated by vignettes of families who have adapted positive touch techniques for their children with autism, are also presented.
