The use of alcohol and six classes of illicit drugs among 485 undergraduates at Indiana University, Bloomington, was studied in 1981-1982 and compared to a state study of alcohol/drug use by high school students. Attention was focused on the following questions: When does drug experimentation begin, and which drugs are currently most popular? How easy is it to obtain illegal drugs at Indiana University, and are certain types of college students more involved with drugs than others? It was found that alcohol was by far the most abused substance by IU college students (89 percent), and that marihuana (56 percent), amphetamines (29 percent), and cocaine (22 percent) were also fairly popular. Fewer students used sedatives (17 percent), hallucinogens (11 percent), and opiates (4 percent). Cocaine, sedative, and hallucinogen use typically began in college, while amphetamine, marihuana, and alcohol use usually began in high school. Off-campus students most frequently used alcohol and other drugs, while fraternity and sorority members were the second most frequent users. Other student groups that might be targeted for prevention/intervention include those with lower grade point averages, males, and those involved in many extracurricular activities.
