Workforce Development for Manufacturing
Bernard, Rosalie
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers (J3), v82 n3 p22-24 Mar 2007
In a recent skills gap report, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) noted some disturbing trends in the gap between the demand for highly skilled manufacturing workers and the potential supply. The NAM report notes that smaller manufacturers rank finding qualified workers ahead of energy costs, taxes and government regulations on the list of the problems most affecting their businesses. Southwest Ohio's manufacturing business feels the nationwide pinch. Many Miami Valley businesses have been closely tied to the auto industry. Bad news from the big auto plants and their major suppliers painted a very gloomy picture of manufacturing in the area, which resulted in a sharp decrease of career and technical education students enrolling in some of the manufacturing trade and industry programs. But the media's gloomy picture of all manufacturing is not accurate. Small manufacturing businesses in the Miami Valley are thriving and hiring. However, they need employees with a solid education in all types of machining and computer skills. For this reason, they have formed a close relationship with the precision machining technology program at Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC). This article describes how MVCTC provides workforce development for manufacturing and technology in the area.
