Bolton, Gavin – Drama/Theatre Teacher, 1993
Discusses the development of a book about Dorothy Heathcote's dramatic approach to education. Describes a lesson on "bullying" that illustrates an attempt to implement Heathcote's "Mantle of the Expert" method. (RS)
Descriptors: Bullying, Dramatics, Elementary Education, Lesson Plans

McGinnis, Patricia – Science Scope, 2001
Introduces a science lab activity in which students dissect fresh squids in groups of four and observe the anatomy. Parent volunteers cook the squid mantle for kids to taste. Includes directions for squid dissection. (YDS)

Mantle-Bromley, Corinne; Miller, Raymond B. – Modern Language Journal, 1991
Analysis of the effect of multicultural lessons on high school students' attitudes toward learning Spanish indicated that sensitivity lessons using attitude change theory lead to more positive attitudes, although students' frustrations with language learning difficulties may cause those positive attitudes to decrease over time. (23 references) (CB)

Blocker, L. Sharon; Mantle-Bromley, Corinne – Teacher Educator, 1997
Examined the impact of program location on preservice teachers' program-related beliefs and experiences. Interviews with individuals prepared at professional development school (PDS) and traditional programs indicated that PDS students had more varied experiences, were more involved with students and teachers, were more confident in their…

Kerr, Richard A. – Science, 1986
Reviews seismological studies that provide evidence of the existence of continental roots beneath the continents. Suggests, that through the collisions of plate tectonics, continents stabilized part of the mobile mantle rock beneath them to form deep roots. (ML)
Descriptors: Geology, Oceanography, Physical Environment, Physical Geography
Bloxham, Jeremy; Gubbins, David – Scientific American, 1989
Describes the change of earth's magnetic field at the boundary between the outer core and the mantle. Measurement techniques used during the last 300 years are considered. Discusses the theories and research for explaining the field change. (YP)

McLean, Dewey M. – Journal of Geological Education, 1988
Discusses the destabilizing influences that affect feedback systems in the earth and trigger disorganization. Presents information that integrates mantle degassing with feed-back systems, and the Sun-Earth-Space energy flow system which is the primary source of energy that drives the Earth's biosphere. (RT)
Descriptors: College Science, Earth Science, Evolution, Geology
Francheteau, Jean – Scientific American, 1983
The earth's oceanic crust is created and destroyed in a flow outward from midocean ridges to subduction zones, where it plunges back into the mantle. The nature and dynamics of the crust, instrumentation used in investigations of this earth feature, and research efforts/findings are discussed. (JN)

Hagenau, W. Paul – Journal of Law and Education, 1980
Examines the responsibility of care owed to students by the school when the student is off the school premises. Concludes that prudent administrators must never presume that students automatically shed the protective mantle of the school's duty of care when they leave the schoolhouse gate. (Author/IRT)

Cooper, Robert C. – Journal of Environmental Health, 1975
The ability of various treatment processes, such as oxidation ponds, chemical coagulation and filtration, and the soil mantle, to remove the agents of infectious disease found in waste water is discussed. The literature concerning the efficiency of removal of these organisms by various treatment processes is reviewed. (BT)

Jordan, June – Wilson Library Bulletin, 1973
The author's credo is not to write anything unless it is usable, good news, or usable information to interdict and humanely supersede the reality of some particular bad news. She urges librarians and publishers to desist their perpetuation of the status quo under the mantle of realism. (Author/SJ)

Bodenhorn, Howard – Journal of Economic Education, 1997
Presents the results of a study that ranked the economics departments of 40 elite, liberal arts colleges by number of publications. The findings suggest that at small colleges academic publishing is being given a mantle of importance previously reserved for teaching. Includes statistical tables concerning rankings and publications. (MJP)

Hossler, Don; Shonia, Olga N.; Winkle-Wagner, Rachelle – European Education, 2007
During the past thirty years there has been a worldwide shift toward neoliberal views of the role of national governments that has resulted in further globalization, privatization, and marketization of many formerly government provided services and activities. The effects of this global shift have been particularly felt in the areas of education…

Vink, Gregory E.; And Others – Scientific American, 1985
Hot spots are isolated areas of geologic activity where volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and upwelling currents occur far from plate boundaries. These mantle plumes are relatively stable and crustal plates drift over them. The nature and location of hot spots (with particular attention to the Hawaiian Islands and Iceland) are discussed. (DH)

Anderson, Don L.; Dziewonski, Adam M. – Scientific American, 1984
Describes how seismic tomography is used to analyze the waves produced by earthquakes. The information obtained from the procedure can then be used to map the earth's mantle in three dimensions. The resulting maps are then studied to determine such information as the convective flow that propels the crustal plates. (JN)
