Managing the Defiant Child: A Guide to Parent Training. [Videotape and Program Manual].
Barkley, Russell A.
This videotape and accompanying manual are intended to provide a review of current knowledge about the management of defiance in children, a common behavior pattern which may be increasing in prevalence and is a known precursor to such serious disorders as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder. The first section of the manual identifies six principles for management methods for defiance: (1) immediacy of consequences; (2) specificity of consequences; (3) consistency of consequences; (4) establishment of incentive programs before punishment; (5) the importance of anticipating and planning for misbehavior; and (6) the reciprocal nature of family interactions. The next section offers guidelines for developing an effective parent training program for defiance in children. Some specific methods for managing the defiant child are identified, including improving attention to compliance, giving effective commands, establishing a home token system, implementing a response-cost procedure, implementing time out, and managing defiant children in public places. Appended are forms for reporting daily school behavior. (Contains 20 references.) (DB)
