Leading Game-Simulation Development Teams: Enabling Collaboration with Faculty Experts
Aleckson, Jon D.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The University of Wisconsin - Madison
This study explored how educational technology development leaders can facilitate increased collaboration between the instructional design and development team and faculty member experts when developing games and simulations. A qualitative, case study method was used to analyze interviews and documents, and Web postings related specifically to three game/simulation projects being developed at a large Midwestern university. In total over 20 interviews were conducted, which included individual project group members of the instructional design and development (IDD) teams. In addition, three program level staff group interviews were conducted during and after research for verification and group reflection on findings. Findings suggest five key factors that leaders can manage to encourage collaboration between the IDD team and faculty expert: leveling power relationships, use of communication tools and techniques, adherence to formal formative evaluation, project management protocols, and, ultimately, managing for project momentum.
