The Risky Business of Reproduction: Environmental Exposures and Associated Risks to Fertility and Healthy Babies
Sattler, Barbara
Zero to Three, v26 n2 p20-25 Nov 2005
Each of the elements required to create a healthy baby--genetics, the anatomy of the male and female reproductive system, the processes by which eggs and sperm are produced, the processes by which the embryo is created and implanted, maternal health during pregnancy, and embryonic/fetal growth and development--is vulnerable to damage by environmental exposure to toxic chemicals. Virtually every person in the U.S. carries "body burdens" of heavy metals (lead, mercury, and others), solvents, plasticizers, a wide range of pesticides, and other chemicals. Strong evidence from animal studies and growing confirmation from human epidemiologic studies imply that environmental factors are contributing to impaired fertility, especially in women younger than 25. The author recommends assessing workplace exposure to environmental toxins when evaluating reproductive health risks to adults and when investigating potential causes for a newborn's health problems. She also recommends teaching young people about environmental reproductive health when they have years in which to adopt lifestyle choices that would maximize their chances for healthy pregnancy.
