A Simple Demonstration of the Effect of Eddy Currents
Sapple, Paul; Reilly, Lee M.
School Science Review, v95 n350 p19 Sep 2013
Demonstrating that a moving magnet can induce an electromagnetic force by causing an electric current in a conducting material can be shown by a number of methods. A common method is dropping a magnet down a copper pipe and showing that the rate of fall is much slower than expected owing to the induced electric current in the copper pipe. This "Science Note" gives a simpler and more visual demonstration involving a nonferrous frying pan and two metal discs of similar size, one magnetic and the other not.
