A Statistical Portrait of the Multicultural/Multiethnic Student Population in Portland Public Schools. 1986-87.

This second annual consolidated report of key statistics covers the status of culturally diverse children in the Portland (Oregon) School District during the 1986-87 school year. The district enrollment by ethnic group as of October 1, 1986, included 37,907 White, 7,913 Black, 3,881 Asian, 1,111 Hispanic, and 1,068 American Indian students, with a total enrollment of 51,880 students. The statistical data fall into the categories of student performance, access to programs, curriculum, staffing, and policy/advisory group representation. Student achievement data cover test scores, school grades, absences, high school dropout rates, and suspension rates. Program access data cover programs for talented and gifted students, high school magnet programs, special education programs, programs for English as a second language and bilingual programs, Chapter 1 programs, and Project SEED (Special Elementary Education for Disadvantaged Students). Multicultural curriculum topics addressed include efforts at expansion, the core curriculum, and specific groups served. The cultural diversity of teaching personnel is examined, and ethnic group participation in formulation of district policies is assessed. Thirty-five tables provide the statistical data. (TJH)
