Students sometimes find introductory drafting and design a boring subject. They must learn the basic skills necessary for drafting and architecture and this may require repetition in order to reinforce those skills. One way to keep students interested is to have them draw objects they encounter in their own lives instead of abstract machine parts from a textbook. The author includes many "real world" drawings, such as classroom layouts for the school, bridges that the students will build, and surveys of the school athletic fields in his drafting and design classes. Concepts that seem particularly hard for students to grasp include section views and exploded views. This article describes activities with these concepts that have proved very effective with the author's students. One such project, "Teach Drafting Concepts with Students' Favorite Foods" allows students to readily grasp the necessary concepts, since the items they are drawing are very familiar to them.
