Investigating Realism in the Arts: Can Elements of Realism Be Identified in "Enter Achilles" (Lloyd Newson)?
Wall, Mellina
Research in Dance Education, v7 n1 p89-100 Apr 2006
This paper investigates realism both as an artistic attitude within the arts, and more specifically in relation to Lloyd Newson's "Enter Achilles". There is initially a discussion of realism, focusing on the theories of Lukacs and Brecht in relation to art, and an attempt to relate these ideas more specifically to dance. Discussion of "Enter Achilles" reveals the underlying issues that are conveyed through the work, and highlights the way in which Newson's piece is a reflection of society as he has experienced it. Further exploration of the work enables identification of aspects within it that demonstrate realist tendencies, and these are related back to the theoretical positions of Lukacs and Brecht. It is concluded that "Enter Achilles" can be considered a realist work that is both accurate and insightful in its representation of social reality, and that it demonstrates aspects of both Lukacs' and Brecht's realist theories.
