The State Department's Foreign Service Institute short-term, intensive course in Spanish language and culture for government employees going to work in Spanish-speaking countries contains an introductory section and 38 lessons and 10 related audio cassettes intended as the basis for a ten-week program with an instructor. The lessons cover these topics: the alphabet and names; classroom greetings and phrases; useful signs, phrases, exchange, and nationality information; hotel language needs and calendar and weather information; restaurants and tipping; babysitters; telephone conversations; asking for directions; taking telephone messages; asking for directions inside a building; dealing with wrong telephone numbers; public transportation; leaving telephone messages; using the familiar form; conversations when meeting people; placing a long-distance call; describing people; calling the physician; social courtesies; greeting visitors; local holidays and related customs; outings; market shopping; sightseeing; sports; housing; grocery shopping; paying a maid or deliveryman; gift shopping; entertainment; banking; directing office workers; dealing with an emergency; and household repairs.
