Materials Production in Open and Distance Learning.
Lockwood, Fred, Ed.
This book contains 19 papers grouped in three sections that lead the reader through the process of planning, producing, and presenting materials in open and distance learning, based on experience in Great Britain. Following an overview by Roger Lewis, the Planning section contains the following six papers: "Resources and Constraints in Open and Distance Learning" (Jane Henry); "Target Audience: Assembling a Profile of Your Learners" (Alan Woodley, Alison Ashby); "G/NVQs [General National Vocational Qualifications] and Open Learning" (Roger Lewis); "Competence-based Training Using Open and Distance Learning Materials" (Richard Freeman); "Course Design: Order and Presentation" (Clive Lawless); and "Selection and Use of Media for Open and Distance Learning" (Adrian Kirkwood). The six papers in part 2, following an overview by Bernadette Robinson, focus on production: "Existing Material: How to Find It, Evaluate It and Customize It" (Derek Rowntree); "Encouraging Active Learning: Models Appropriate for Self-Instruction" (Fred Lockwood); "Which Team for Open and Distance Learning Materials Production?" (David Hawkridge); "Assessing Learner Workload" (Ellie Chambers); "Developing Learner Autonomy: Project-based Learning in Open and Distance Learning" (Alistair Morgan); and "Developmental Testing: Monitoring Academic Quality and Teaching Effectiveness" (Hossein Zand). In part 3, an overview by Janet Jenkins is followed by seven papers on materials presentation in distance education: "Outcomes and Assessment in Open and Distance Education" (Peter Raggatt); "Planning for Learner Support and the Facilitator Role" (Mary Thorpe); "Workplace Learners: Learners Learning in 'Unconventional' Settings" (Hilary Temple); "The Technology and Management of Desk-top Publishing" (Paul Lefrere); "Managing Open Learning: Designing and Operating the System" (Hilary Temple); "Assuring Quality in Open and Distance Learning" (Bernadette Robinson); and "Course Evaluation: Improving Academic Quality and Teaching Effectiveness" (Judith Calder).
