Andrea Lunsford and Karen Lunsford conclude "Mistakes Are a Fact of Life: A National Comparative Study," a discussion of their research project exploring patterns of formal grammar and usage error in first-year writing, with an invitation to "conduct a local version of this study." The author was eager to accept their invitation; learning and applying grammar rules helped him tremendously as a student. He wanted to emulate the Lunsford and Lunsford study, contribute to the national data on grammar and usage error in first-year writing, and learn what their students are actually doing with regard to error or the lack of error when they write. This article presents the author's perspective on a research project into the grammar and usage error patterns among students at the author's university which showed that error can be located on a rhetorical map--within texts, writers, readers, and their social contexts. Through this paper, the author hopes to help students and teachers deal productively with error. (Contains 1 note.)
