A Photographic Essay of Apache Clothing, War Charms, and Weapons, Volume 2-Part D.
Thompson, Doris; Jacobs, Ben
As part of a series of guides designed for instruction of American Indian children and youth, this resource guide constitutes a pictorial essay on Apache clothing, war charms, and weaponry. A brief historical introduction is followed by 21 question suggestions for classroom use. Each of the 12 photographic topics is accompanied by a descriptive narrative. Topics are: (1) Raiding and Warfare (distinction between confiscating enemy property and waging war); (2) Apache Dress (development from the early deerskin through the influence of Mexican and Anglo cultures); (3) Moccasin, Wooden Awl and Buckskin Case (repair of Moccasins and clothing while on the move); (4) Bow (construction and use); (5) Arrows (construction and use of hardwood and reed arrows); (6) Quiver (made of mountain lion skin and holding 30 to 40 arrows); (7) Spear (artistic construction using the sotol stalk); (8) War Club (a 20 inch stick fastened to a round stone covered with rawhide used to kill men and beasts); (9) Helmet (symbolic and ceremonial use); (10) Shield used principally in ceremonies as a symbol of defense and viewed as a protective charm); (11) War Charms (made only by those who had 'enemies-against power'--a chief or shaman); (12) Gun (ceremonies devised to secure protection from the gun).
