This syallbus was designed to provide local educational agencies with a framework for establishing a required health education instructional program in New York's public schools. This booklet explains the rationale for health education and the relationship of health education to the goals of the Board of Regents. Attention is given to program components, health education personnel, and using resources, as well as to planning, implementing, and evaluating a health education program. The syllabus also states the expected learning outcomes, including the goals, objectives, concepts, skills, and understanding of health education, and suggests a process for the organization and administration of the program. Eleven major conceptual areas within health education are covered in the syllabus: (1) human growth and development; (2) emotional health; (3) nutrition; (4) environmental health; (5) family life education; (6) diseases and disorders; (7) consumer health; (8) alcohol, tobacco, and other drug substances; (9) safety, first aid, and survival; (10) community health; and (11) healthful lifestyles.
